Brow Lift

 What is an Eyebrow Lift?

woman's face, forehead/eyebrow liftThe brow lift operation aims to correct the loss of soft tissue elasticity in the upper third of the face, which may lead to ptosis of the brow and hypertonicity of the frontalis, corrugator supercilii, and procerus muscles with subsequent wrinkling of the forehead. This confers a look often described as tired. Several techniques are available to correct this occurrence depending on the individual patient's needs and desires.

Using a forehead/eyebrow lift procedure, physicians alter the tissue above the eyes to reduce lines and smooth the shape of the forehead. Your surgeon may suggest either an open, or conventional procedure, or a minimally-invasive, endoscopic technique depending on your surgical goals and your health history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for a forehead/eyebrow lift?

Forehead/eyebrow lifts are most often recommended for adults to minimize facial furrows, frown lines or drooping brows. Often stress, facial movements and age create horizontal lines, furrows and frown lines that can make us look older, more tired and even angry. Eyebrow lifts can help to restore your youthful appearance, giving you an energetic and refreshed look.

What does a forehead/eyebrow lift involve?

Eyebrow lifting involves a surgical procedure to correct drooping eyebrows, hooding over eyes, furrowed forehead and frown lines by removing excess tissue and altering muscles to tighten forehead skin. Surgery lasts between one and two hours and patients are given local or general anesthesia. Several techniques may be used to achieve the desired effects including the coronal, endoscopic, pretrichial, supracilliary and translid browpexy techniques.

The endoscopic technique is performed with only three to five short incisions, less than an inch long, which minimizes scarring. Your surgeon will insert a pencil-like camera, or endoscope through each of the incisions to get a clear view of the muscles and tissue. Another instrument is then used to lift the forehead skin and muscles and remove underlying tissue.

What should I do in the time leading up to my forehead/eyebrow lift surgery?

Your doctor will give you instructions before your forehead/eyebrow lift surgery, including guidelines on eating, drinking and taking or avoiding certain medications and vitamins. Avoid smoking or tobacco use four to six weeks before surgery and aspirin 14 days before and after your procedure.

You will also want to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for at least one night.

What should I expect following forehead/eyebrow lift surgery?

Patients receiving a traditional forehead lift may experience temporary swelling, numbness, headaches and bruising. All side effects can be controlled with doctor-prescribed medication. As the nerves begin to heal, numbness will be replaced by an itching sensation that can take up to six months to fully subside. Stitches or clips can be removed within two weeks.

Some patients who received the traditional forehead lift experience temporary hair loss or thinness of hair. Permanent hair loss is rare and natural growth is resumed within a few months or weeks.

Patients undergoing endoscopic surgery tend to recover at a faster rate, although they often still experience some discomfort and mild swelling immediately following operation. Stitches may be removed within one week.

Are there any other options for me?

Eyebrow lifts are one of the only procedures that can effectively correct drooping brows, but they are often performed in conjunction with other procedures. Your surgeon may recommend a face lift to smooth the entire look of the face, or eyelid surgery. Consult your doctor to decide which option is best for you.
